Fresno State University Cheers Swallow Control MethodPDFPrintE-mail

Bird Problem: Fresno State University completed a new Science II Building and swallows immediately noticed the new potential for a nesting colony. The swallows set up residence quickly, building their mud nests and making a mess of the building walls and walkways below. When Bird Solutions was first called to inspect the bird problem it was too late to remove the nests because eggs had already been laid and swallows are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act which prevents nest removal until the birds have abandoned the nests.

Bird Control Product Solution: After waiting for the birds to leave on their southern migration, the old swallow nests were removed, the area was thoroughly cleaned and our bird control experts installed a newer bird deterrent that is very effective against swallows called Bird Slide. Designed for high visibility areas, this swallow control product blends nearly invisibly with the structure of the building and prevents the swallows from nesting in those angles the next season. Although Bird Solutions often utilizes bird netting to deter swallows, in this instance the Bird Slide was the best bird control product due to the high visibility of the problem areas. As you can see from the pictures, the swallow control product almost looks like it is part of the natural architecture (product is installed in the corners).

After the birds had departed on their annual migration, swallow nests were removed and the BirdSlide bird control product was installed to prevent swallows from building their nests again the following year. BirdSlide cuts off the angle of the eave that the swallows like to anchor their nests in and the birds leave to find a more desirable nesting area. This bird control product can also be painted to blend seamlessly with a building’s architecture.
