House Sparrow
A small, persistent bird that gets inside big-box stores, warehouses, and food facilities through the smallest gaps.
How to identify
A small, stout bird about 6 inches long. Males have gray crowns, white cheeks, and a black bib. Females are dull brown with striped backs.
Why it is a problem for commercial facilities
Sparrows slip through small structural gaps and nest inside light fixtures, electrical boxes, and HVAC ducting. Indoors, they create contamination risk for food and inventory.
Protected status
Not protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, because it is a non-native, introduced species. Local ordinances and animal welfare laws still apply.
How BSI controls it
- Bird exclusion netting with 3/4-inch mesh, the size needed to stop sparrows
- Ledge slope systems with end caps that block nesting
- Live removal and cleanup for birds already inside a building

Common questions
Why do spikes not work on sparrows?
Sparrows are small enough to nest between spike rods. Netting with 3/4-inch mesh or slope systems are the right fit.
Can you remove sparrows from inside an operating store?
Yes. BSI handles live trapping and removal for birds inside occupied buildings, then closes the entry points.
Dealing with this species at your facility?
Send two photos and the project location. We will come back with a recommended system and scope.
